Your brick story

no longer do i get excited when he talks to me, but certain habits still remain the same-- like i can recognize his voice and i usually know where he is-- things like that, but they're all automatic. i would get rid of them if i could.

I think that is what we all aim for when someone we love hurts us and destroys a relationship. We hope that one day, what he says or does will not affect us. It sounds like you are doing well as you have reached that point. In a while, the rest will follow - you will meet someone else whose voice will replace his in your thoughts, or his voice will simply fade with time. I am still at the point where everything he does without me leaves a dull pain. I wonder if he meets other girls he likes when he goes out with his friends, even though I have no right to worry about this since we are no longer together. But remember that we are not alone in this! How many other people are going through the same thing, I wonder? And what stage of recovery are they at?
