Your brick story

This is a painting I did in 2003 on an 8"X10" paint board, using acrylic paints. It was an image which came to mind, suddenly and clearly.

I have always thought she is sitting on a train. An old train with those high backed long bench seats which were covered in black leather.

She stares out the window. The world passes by and she sees none of it. She is so unhappy, but she would rather not cry. She holds herself rigid even as the train sways, stops and starts, as if by remaining motionless she can keep the tears from falling. She feels so empty and hollow, like a mannequin. She imagines her face shows no expression - but we see something there, don't we?

the thing that caught me was that someone who was trying so hard to be so chilled on the outside would choose to wear a frangipanni flower on her hat - this one has a love of beauty that she hides. UM x

Yeah? I really don't understand the frangipani. But note, form her point of view, she can't see it.

That's the fun with these half-awake/half-asleep images - they don't come with clear explainations. Like dreams in that respect.

But even if she can't see it - it is there - surely that is a matter of choice - I think it is intentional that she chose such a strong flower for her hat it is like a titbit for the world to know her by.

Last night, I had tried to reply, but clicked 'refresh' again instead of the 'spell check' button. I can only put that down to tiredness.
I wanted to say how much I appreciate your perspectives and comments. You have such a positive spin, (in the nicest sense of the word) which I usually don't see for myself. Thank you so much, muchly, very much, much muchness, and (((((heaps with hugsalot))))) -Mebenji

I love this painting-the colour used is striking.
The eyes are said to be 'windows of the soul' and this captures hers in such a beautiful way.
