Your brick story

I HATE GIFT CARDS!

Don't get me wrong - I love receiving them, but I hate giving them. I have silly reasons for this ...

1. I could find something more meaningful that was less expensive.

2. It shows how much I 'bought'.

3. The amount may offend people - too much or too little.

I text messaged E tonight, Sue's husband, asking what she would like for Christmas. I have gotten her gifts that felt practical in the past, but know that she hasn't used them and doubt she liked them. This year, I wanted to do something more personal. The past year has brought up many different feelings for the both of us. We have struggled with this mother/daughter relationship.

I couldn't imagine what I was going to get her, but knew the feeling that I would feel when I would find it. I haven't found anything yet, so needed some direction.

He said she would like gift cards to Macy's - an upper scale clothing/home goods store ... JCPenney - a step down from Macy's ... and to Kohl's - a step down from Kohl's.

I love each store, but WHAT?? Did anyone get the memo?? I HATE gift cards!!

Each year, she gets me something so expensive. Last year, she got me three gift cards to different places, all worth $50 each and then another load of different kinds of gifts ... journals, electronics, etc.

When I got his text, I sighed. I suppose gift cards it is - it's what she wants. Did I mention that I hate gift cards? Hmm ... maybe I did!

You can give another kind of gift card, that you make yourself - offering so many baby-sitting night, so many home cooked dinners, so many times taken out for breakfast - whatever you like, what ever you want. You can make a lovely little book, and they can tear out the "coupon" filling in the dates and places that they want [make sure you don't leave it too open, or you may end up taking them to Australia for a month...] but you know what I mean? Still a gift card, but much, much, more personal, offering your time, your everything. Dunno if that helps...

What a great idea Jomo. Gift cards of you Inspire and maybe a few little things too - a nice photo frame for a photo of her dad and her when she was a child, something about hockey? and something of you - sounds like a hamper..

I wasn't sure in the end - did you say you liked or didn't like gift cards??
