Your brick story

This week I want to have some fun and celebrate my son's 8 th birthday. He is a fine little fellow and is such a treasure - I love the cuddles and the interruptions to my work as he comes to tell me that he loves me. Right now he is trying to work out so many things about the world we live in and he is working through so much that has happened in our lives in the last week, few months and year.

I don't want to have a shadow cast over his special day on Thursday - and it is special because no one under the age of 8 can have bubble gum and it is a big thing to be allowed bubble gum. A kind of a weird rule that I unilaterally determined to save their teeth a while longer. My kids have argued that the rule was harsh and unreasonable given their peers access to bubble gum, have threatened to call for a democratic rather than autocratic home - learnt the meaning of denizens - worked out the it is hard to run a coup against autocrats who have power. All in the name of bubble gum - oh I loathe it.

Tomorrow is a serious day for shopping and buying presents for my little boy - it will be the only time he is presented with bubble gum. I am going to try to find eggplant or turnip flavour from the magic shop!

And I thought I was busy? Not a patch on you. What a full couple of days and how emotionally demanding.

I hope you enjoy the shopping and that your son will love his special day on Thurday - chewing gum and all.

Happy Birthday to him!!! (I've never really liked chewing gum, even when I was given some I'd wanted - way back, long ago, stick gum in foil, each piece wrapped seperatedly, of a particular brand name, in USA - not good for your teeth back then. Maybe that was it's sugar content. But now we get told it promotes saliva in the mouth, which is good, and can help keep teeth and gums clean - but if you chew the sugar-free bands...my dentist provides little gift bags each year, which contain a little tube of toothpaste, a basic toothbrush, floss and sample packs of gum! Oh my! ;)

On top of eveything thing else, this is what we talk about???? For one reason or other, I think it is the most comfortable....

How rude. My dentist gives me nothing at all! I am offended, now, I am.

You one busy person, Maid! Go gettem!

Bubble gum is not like chewing gum, is it? I can't chew either, as I have a small plate - and the gum sticks to it and it is not funny - though you bloody lot might find it funny to watch...

So - the coming of age - a rite of passage - bubble gum! May he find it less of a disappointment than many.

He is two years older than my granddaughter - howzat! She is 6 in Oct. I am old enough to be your mother. Sigh.

Yes, Mebenj - I like this sort of talk, too. It is how life is, eh, all bits n' bobs...

Bubble gum is much softer and you are able to blow bubbles easily ... it comes in many more flavors, usually much larger pieces! Chewing gum is all about the adults, little sticks as Mebenji mentioned wrapped in foil ... flavor lasts longer than chewing gum, bubble gum is tasteless in about five minutes ... after all the blowing and popping!
I suppose that is a bit much for the topic of gum ... but I'm so glad that your son will be able to experience it for the first time! You must let us know how it goes. Oh my ... I don't dare take on your schedule, you'd find me flat on the floor, half asleep and hands covering my eyes. (Oh wait, that was last night!)
Lots of love and many hugs for a stress-less and wonderful next few days!

He woke at 2:55 am and I promised him if he didn't go straight back to sleep that the presents would be left on the top of the kitchen cupboard until this afternoon! He woke again at 5:00 and found me up and working so he thought it was reasonable to get up but then waited patiently until his dad and sister woke.

His sister chose him a toy that I don't understand, and he received a DS lite with a game and case, a chapter book, and three packets of bubble gum! Aunty and Grannie sent money so he wants to go shopping for a game.

I turned up at school with 36 iced donuts - I think cakes are too much trouble for the teacher - and about 10 minutes ago I played this time 8 years ago - he had just been born and so aunty , his adult cousin, his sister and I regaled with the stories of his first days - Dad's home now and the home movies will come out and I will get all caught up in reliving moments and feel so lucky. My husband and I will sit and have a drink of something and talk again about the fortunes of love and marriage and parenthood.

Roast lamb, old potatoes, sweet potatoe, peas and broad beans for dinner - his favourite meal - lots of dead meat.

Hey UM, reading all the things you've written on your brick was already quite something for me, but then I read your comment about your son's birthday, and I thought: What a mother wouldn't do for her kid ? Happy birthday to the little man, and congrats to his parents. Right now it's still thursday down under, so I'm not late..... ;o)
