  Happy birthday Pixel, I am happy to tell someone that you are ill - I'll make up a good story for you - had to go hang gliding because of a personal emergency - needed to lead a group of young people in party ettiquette - something like that?

  I hope you get to enjoy a happy day - I actually prefer my forties to thirties - it isn't any different on this side - well not that I have noticed. I saw a Maya Angelou interview with the Oprah where she was claiming that her 70's have been the best time yet. There's something to look forward to.

  D'ya know what else...I didn't even notice when I went form 39 to 40 - and since no-one else did either, how can I be sure it really happened??

  You be sure to have a happy day. I always make a point of buying something just for me - big or small, just something I have not bought for myself ever or in a very long while, or I have been wanting for a long while...I pick one and that is my Birthday to me.

  I really am not happy about being 40. I can see no advantage to ageing. I have no-one significant in my life. I have worked for 15 years in the same job with little progression. I have parents who depend on me more and more. Yes i have friends but most of them have very busy lives. There is a 'party' for me later but i really mean i do not wish to celebrate.

  Well if you don't feel like celebrating your birthday - maybe you could celebrate other things - if your friends with very busy lives are gathering with you they must think you are a special person. Do you want to share what you feel being 40 represents? UM xx

  It does not represent anything. It is a marker that is all. The midpoint with only a physical downhill from now on. I have not achieved anything of great significance in the last 40 years and i doubt i will in the next. My friends (all three of them) are making time to see me. I am sure it will be a riotous evening. ha ha
