Your brick story

A new year (5th), a new teacher and... a new treatment. These are all the comments of my new teacher for the first five weeks of the new school year.

I think the first few words say it all. That young man, about 30-35, so about the same age as the witch, was the principal teacher of my school since about three years then. My brother was his pupil too.

How amazing what a bit of dignity and respect can do to make others feel okay. This man sounds as if he was born to teach young people - and he sounds as if her genuinely likes young people too. So this was year 5 - was the whole year okay - or am I being too impatient? UM xx

    Second period comments:
[Quote:] Many times during written tests or exercises he has proved to myself that he is perfectly capable to understand and follow what's happening in class. Bravo !
It remains to him to convince himslef that not only he must but above all he can reach these results every day.
I've noted a slight improvement with the quality of his homework.
In class, there also, I've noted an improvement of his speed to do his work. Bravo !
The path will be long, but it is with a lots of pleasure that I'm noting the above points. Courage !

    Third period:
    [Quote:]
We must set three goals to be reached by the end of the year. An improvement of his participation to oral courses, in the quality of his work, as well as in his participation in group activities.
Overseas is perfectly aware of the necessity to reach these three goals, but he has to convince himself of ine thing: the effort must come from him. It's only when he'll do the first step that I'll be able to meet him.
Some points make me hope for an improvement: start of the dialogue with the other members of the group, amongst other things.
He has to convince himself that his ideas and opinions are interesting for his classmates but he still has to do the first step. It serves nothing to take pleasure in loneliness, far from it.

What a change after the Witch. What do you think of that ?

Okay - so now what I want to happen is this teacher rescues all of the kids from the Witch and she is dipped into a vat of bubbling licorice where she disolves and turns the licorice into tar and it is poured on the playground and all the kids run and play - be noisy - play hopscotch and oh no - have fun!!!

I don't think this happened but I would have liked it. Did the boy ever decide that he was just as valuable as all others - or was there still a sense that he was less than worthy? It is interesting that this teacher focussed on boy Overseas making an effort rather than taking courage and testing what it would be like to have a go.

It's hard to convince ourselves of our worth unless we feel that we are valued. xx UM

Guess what ? The Witch is still teaching in the same school. The only thing I hope for is her getting slapped a few times during her career to force her out of that stupid way of teaching and behaving with kids. - I know things are not settled for me, I'll have to talk about her and denouce all she did. I don't know if I ever felt valuable then, but that problem isn't only linked to school, far from it.

    Hi POverseas

Would you write to her and tell her about the negative impact she had on you?

I once wrote to a nun from a convent school I went to and told her stuff I had not mentioned in 30 odd years. I actually got a very good response from her.

That tale may be a brick at some point.

    Take care

    Hey harmony.
No, I haven't thought about telling her the impact she has had on me, but I'll think about it. Might be a good idea.
    Cheers.

I think we have lots of bricks from our childhood - the difference is that you two are brave and make them and I just visualise them. And a good idea Harmony - a way of expressing what happened and not provoking a big "thing". In my case I was lucky and had some irish working class nuns who helped me and didn't harm me - I would have been in real trouble otherwise - maybe I should write and express this also. UM xx
