Another day, another city

Today I will fly from London to San Francisco for one meeting, then on to Seattle and then back to New York for a day and then I head to the Far East.

My job is so stressful and it has been made so much worse by the economic climate.  I really ask myself if it is all worth it, all this stress, but I don't know how to stop.

Hi Onlyme and welcome to the wall.

When I read your post in the 'where are you' thread, that you fly a lot, I made the assumtion that you were aircrew; obviously not.

I've no idea what you do but you do mention flying around for meetings so I have to ask; in this day and age of high speed communications, video conferencing etc - why do you have to be there in person?

I can maybe understand if you need to physically present or demonstrate something, but if it's just talking, then why not do it from the comfort of your own office, or even your living room.

Cheaper, less stress, a vast reduction in your personal carbon footprint and more time to get on with proper work.

    Take care.

That is probably not as exciting as it sounds. How does it impact your personal life? do you have a personal life?

Hello Onlyme  - that does sound stressful, is this a 'normal' day for you or is this pretty unusual? I wonder if it is the travel that is stressing you out or the job itself?? (or both!) I had  a very good friend who was constantly jumping on planes and spending months away from home - although she enjoyed her job, eventually she found the constant upheaval/living out of a suitcase too unsettling and is now in the process of retraining for a completely different ccareer. She will take a big pay cut, but I have to say I have never seen her so happy and content. Finding a good work/life balence is so important... could you look into changing your job slightly so it doesn't take you away from home so much, or is there perhaps something else you would like to do??

Middle of the night Seattle. I left a meeting an hour ago. I work for a large US investment bank and travel like this is completely normal. I don't even bother with a suitcase, just a clean shirt and underwear.  The hotel's have toiletries.

The job is exhilarating, well paid and highly stressful. Some of my 'friends' (you don't really have friends in this career) have left the industry and have changed jobs and they find their new pace of life too slow and the quality of output lower.

I have never done anything else, so I wouldn't know what it's like. But you hear of people having mental and physical health issues and I do wonder if it can sneak up on you without you knowing.

Hi Onlyme - your job sounds exciting but very stressful. But, it also sounds like you get a lot of pleasure out of it. I wonder, do you look after yourself properly when you are jumping around like this? Try to get lots of sleep, eat healthy food and excercise and stretch when you can. The human body and mind can withstand a great amount I think, but when you start to neglect it physically, emotional/mental problems can creep in. To do your job it sounds like you dont just need to be emotionally strong and healthy, but physically also. Also, do you have a good 'relaxation routine' - somethign you can do easily while on planes and so on? IT might soun like mumbo jumbo bUt I find that when my life gets hectic, I need to stick to some sort of routine to relax my mind, for me it is reading and deep breathing excercises followed by a full glass of water. There is comfort in routine!

Hi Only me!  I have read your posts and can't help but ask if you have a personal life?  Girlfriend or wife?  As much as your job sounds exhilarating I have to wonder if you find yourself quite lonely at times.  You sound like a real go getter and there is nothing wrong with that at all but personally I would miss the other wonderful things in life.  I guess with everything there is sacrifice though.
