What is your favourite kids film?

I love taking my daughter to see a film - even if it does mean a consumption of popcorn that makes me worry she will explode as sure as the corn. And it is a great excuse to see some truly wonderful films. Like nemo, stuart little, over the hedge, shrek, toy story, monsters - i adore them all. But last week - during half term - we ended up going to a film we had not intended to see - as Alvin and the Chipmunks was fully booked. It is called The Water Horse - and it is magical - about a young lost and lonely boy who cannot acknowledge that his father has been sunk at sea during WW2 leaving him with a dark dread of water. He discovers an egg that turns out to be the Loch Ness monster - and the film is all about confronting your own demons and making friends with them I guess. There was a moment when he has to say goodbye as he lets his 'baby' go - that had my daughter sitting howling on my lap and her best friend soaking my arm where she had laid her head - and i was glad that they were making so much noise because it hid the steady drip of my tears falling like rain on two little ones that will have to make friends of their own demons as they grow.

Walt Disney's Sleeping Beauty. I love the music and the stylistic animation. I'm not too keen on the whole 'helpless princess' bit (Beauty and the Beast was always my favorite fairytale because she saved him), but I love the whole look and feel of this film.

Sounds like a busy time - i hope preparations for your finals are going well - perhaps a PHD in the psycho-social impact of kid's films is on the horizon? Rx

Things are going well with my finalz.

I was invited to apply for a summer film program with Disney, but, I am unable to accept it right now. There is always next summer.

I'd love to write a screenplay for Disney or some other film program.....

I find it hard to go beyond Mulan for a decent female hero  and I love the story and the humour - especially the wit of the grandmother.

' Shame my kids think it is a bit lame for them now - we are watching Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders in Let them eat cake about 4 times a week.  I dare not buy any of my favourite Young ones on DVD in case I end up living with the characters at the dinner table - not quite ready for that.

My all time favorite is Mary Poppins, but The Little Mermaid, Finding Nemo and Alvin and the Chipmunks are pretty high on the list. It's been a while since seeing a film with children ... the last being Alvin and the Chipmunks ... Oh we did see Hannah Montana, but that didn't go over well!

For a positive weepfest it has to be The Iron Giant - iron giant falls to earth, the government thinks he's a nuclear baddie (1950's USA), they try and kill him by firing large missile at him, giant gets blown up defending small town, giant ... builds ... himself ... again.... sniff, sniff! it is wonderful. The Wizard of Oz, Pinocchio and Swallows and Amazons. The first for the understated anarchy: all is not as it seems, but you can get around it anyway. The second for sheer artistry: no cartoon before or since comes close. And the last for the joy of being a young person at a time when self-reliance didn't equate to negligence.

My daughter is standing behind me singing each of the songs and speaking most of the script of Sweeney Todd, while she is rubbing my neck, I am constantly surprised how much this film appeals to kids.

However a film we can all sit down together and watch is "How to eat fried worms" - it is gross enough to retain the attention of the kids but the theme is about dealing with bullies and one of the heroes is a girl so it is fine for both genders.  It has good values and lots of laughs.

Someone told me about this website today

    www.kids-in- mind.com

At this website you can check out recent releases of kids and see what's behind the rating.  The new Narnia film has been rated here as M - not surprising for the battle scenes I recall in the book.  Kind of a shame though for younger kids as it sounds a bit gory but at least reading through the nature of the scenes that instruct the rating I know what to expect.

Thought it would be a good one to share with others

I can't believe it!  I simply can't believe it!  Not one of you has mentioned "The Princess Bride" which must be one of the stunningest mostest wonderfullest one of all.  And that's from my kids, too - though "Time Bandits" rates high, and both "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" movies - a dear friend has seen the last Mimsy so often she knows all the dialogue by heart.  Doesn't need the sound on... And she is in her 40's...

"Babe" is one of my favourites - as well as "Babe in the City".

    "That'll do, Pig.  That'll do".

I'm totally with you inspire8085 - it's got to be Mary Poppins!!!! I got the DVD out yesterday for my 4 yr old to watch (for those of you who read my talkabout on Saturday he no longer hates me but watch this space!) and he has been glued to it ever since. I amazed myself and my son by still knowing all the words to all the songs....ahhhh

I beleive that I have seen it at least 100 times - plus all of the extras.  The best kids film that has all of us watching is "School of Rock"  with the very funny Jack Black - a wonderful way to ensure that children pick up some decent musical influences - nice soothing stuff - Deep Purple, Pink Floyd and ever so gentle ACDC.  It works in this family and is a blessing on long car trips that we can have a broader range of music played.
