Subject:

Are body piercings a cool way to show who you are?

A mate of mine has just had this 'great' body piercing - two honking great curves of metal coming out of his nose. He says that he wanted to show that he is a wild and dangerous beast. I just replied that he would be bloody dangerous to anyone who snogged him. One way to hook your bird I suppose. But i have to say he has got a lot of interest and i am now wondering whether to do something uber cool and get a piercing as i already have some wicked tattoes. Would you do it?

I'm not sure that I think that piercings make a personality - I do agree that if someone sees themselves as a particular character and the piercings assist communicating that image then it works.

How do you see yourself samman - is there a part of you that piercings will help to reinforce to others?  You have tats and what are they as images of you to others?  Are they messages or or warnings?

No I wouldn't get piercings - it isn't me - but I like the fact that it is an expression for others.  UM

Hi  Samman  a few years back when piercings and tats were  rarely seen they made their owners highly visible  Now days  they're everywhere and hardly warrant a glance so of course those who want attention wear bigger and bigger hardware. Are you  attention seeking ?

Where will it stop  i guess it will depend on how heavy and tricky it is to carry off- you wouldn't want youtr horns getting stuck in a lift door or  poke someone in the eye.  Cate xx

I always worry about the permanency of these things - people change and their desires change over time.

The ones that make me feel strange are the over grown holes in ears - which of course won't close up - how would a 65 year old woman leading a normal life in suburbia cope with those!

With little crocheted covers for going out?

Or using them to hang one's spectacle's on

Actually those holes might come in handy for quite a few things.  Are you sure they don't close up?

or for playing basketball with moth balls?

i have just made an appointment at a tattoo place. have wanted one for years. nearly got a whole arm done in new york last year.

piercings only work for me samman if they are discrete - like studs in attractive noses. sounds as if you may be competing with your friend rather than thinking about who you are?

Hi Roze. My worry with tattoos is only that if you plan on growing old. I have been blessed with what friends have described as great skin- scandinavian - and until recently it was taught and terrific . No amount of botox will fix the wrinkles that are appearing now . I think this young generation is venturing into unknown territory . What will happen when they reach their 60s the pics- will be distorted  like a wrinkled canvas No  amount of cosmetic surgery will bring them back.

Now there is one part of me that isn't wrinkly-- I'm sitting on it :)
